Tamil Cradle Songs Aaru –
Aararo Aariraro Meaning
“Aararo aariraro” is the sound every Tamil mother hums to put her baby to sleep, and this long thaalattu (lullaby) is sung in villages from one generation to the next.
The mother calls her baby many sweet names: kanne (my eyes), kanmani (apple of my eye), paalagan (little one), vaazhappazha meni (soft as a banana), vaikaasi maangani (mango of the Vaikasi month), ranjithame (precious one) and seeraala (dear one). Again and again she asks: sleep, kanne, sleep.
She sings of the Kaveri river, a coral-legged cradle cut from green iluppai wood, the temple chariot (ther) coming back home, and the months of Maasi and Thai that will bring good luck to the uncle’s (maaman) and father’s families.
