Pattanathai Parka Pogum Meaning
A child is sending uncle (chinna mama) off to the big city (pattanam) with a long shopping list! “Uncle, don’t forget this boy when you go to see the city!”
“Bring a whistle (oothukuzhal) for the baby and pretty things for my elder sister (akka). Dear mother needs a nice Bangalore saree. Bring six yards (aaru gajam) of shirt cloth for father, and a walking stick with an ivory handle for grandpa. Bring a set of teeth for toothless grandma!”
“And for me, a bicycle! If you don’t, I won’t let you go! Tie a knot in your cloth so you don’t forget anything I said.” Tying a knot in the end of a cloth is the old way of remembering something.
