Tamil Thai Vazhthu Meaning

The song praises Tamil as a mother goddess. The earth, dressed in the ocean, has a lovely face, and that face is the land of Bharat. On it the Deccan is like her small crescent forehead, and the fine Dravidian land is the fragrant tilak on that forehead.

Just as the scent of that tilak spreads joy to the whole world, the fame of Tamil spreads in every direction. “O great Tamil goddess, we wonder at your ever-young beauty and strength, forget our work and praise you, praise you, praise you.”

About the Song

The words are by Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai (Manonmaniam Sundaranar) and come from the opening of his verse play Manonmaniyam. The tune sung today was set by M. S. Viswanathan. Tamil Nadu adopted it as the state song in 1970, and it is sung at the start of government functions and in school prayer.
