Aathichoodi Meaning
Aathichoodi was written by the poet Avvaiyar, and every Tamil child learns it at school. Each line starts with the next letter of the Tamil vowels (uyir ezhuthu), from அ to ஃ, so children learn the letters and good habits together.
Aram seya virumbu: love to do good deeds. Aaruvathu sinam: anger should be cooled down. Iyalvathu karavel: do not hide what you are able to give. Eevathu vilakkel: do not stop others from giving. Udaiyathu vilambel: do not show off what you have. Ookkamathu kaividel: never give up trying.
En ezhuthu igazhel: never look down on numbers and letters, that is, on learning. Erpathu igazhchi: begging is shameful. Aiyam ittu un: give to the needy first, then eat. Oppuravu ozhugu: live in harmony with everyone. Othuvathu ozhiyel: never stop learning. Auviyam pesel: do not speak out of envy. Akkam surukkel: do not give short measure of grain.
