15 अप्रैल 1469 में तलवंडी में जन्मे गुरु नानक देव जी सिक्ख धर्म के संस्थापक थे। उनके जन्म के समय पंडितों की यह भविष्यवाणी थी कि उनकी रुचि धर्म मार्ग में रहेगी और वे हिंदू-मुसलमान दोनों से समान आदर पाएँगे।  

गुरु नानक देव जी की धर्नाजन में कभी रुचि नहीं थी। एक समय बीस रुपए देकर, व्यापार हेतु उनके पिता जी ने उन्हें लाहौर भेजा। इन पैसों का उपयोग उन्होंने रास्ते में मिले कुछ साधुओं को भोजन करवाने के लिए किया। व्यापार के अन्य प्रयोजनों में भी जब उन्हें डाला गया, तो उन्होंने दुखी-दरिद्रों पर ही अपना धन खर्च किया।

अठारह वर्ष की आयु में उनका विवाह हुआ और बाद में उनके दो पुत्र  भी हुए। परंतु उनका मन संसार में कभी नहीं लगा और वे भक्ति की खोज में निकल पड़े। जगह-जगह उन्होंने अपने सिद्धांतों का प्रचार किया। वे लंगर  का आयोजन करते थे जहाँ अमीर-गरीब सभी एक रसोई में भोजन पकाते और खाते थे।

गुरु नानक देव जी ने हिंदू और मुसलमान धर्म की सभी अच्छाइयों का समावेश सिक्ख धर्म में किया। उन्होंने सुबह के समय की प्रार्थना के लिए ‘जपुजी साहिब’ और संध्या के समय के लिए ‘रहरास साहिब’ की रचना  की 1538 ई. में 70 वर्ष की आयु में वे परमात्मा में लीन हो गए। उनका संदेश उनके शिष्य अंगद ने आगे बढ़ाया।

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’ was born on 15 April 1469 at Rāi Bhoi Kī Talvaṇḍī, now called Nankana Sahib, near Lahore, Pakistan. He was the son of Kalyan Chand Das Bedi and Mata Tripta. His father was a patwari (accountant) for crop revenue in the village of Talwandi. Guru Nanak Dev was married to Mata Sulakkhani.

Guru Nanak as a young man was dedicated and passionate about work apart from his philanthropist work. He was employed in Sultanpur as a store keeper. He spent little money for himself and used to donate everything to the poor. He used to talk about Unity and harmony between the Hindus and Muslims then. His messages were spreading like wildfire in Punjab and adjoining areas since his early days.

He is the founder of the religion of Sikhism and is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. He traveled to places far and wide teaching people the message of one God who dwells in every one of God’s creations and constitutes the eternal Truth. It is part of Sikh religious belief that the spirit of Guru Nanak’s sanctity, divinity and religious authority descended upon each of the nine subsequent Gurus when the Guruship was devolved on to them. Guru Nanak Dev Ji died on September 22, 1539 at the age of 70.

The birthday of Guru Nanak Dev is celebrated as Guruparab. His birthday is celebrated in the month of Kartik on the day of full moon known as Kartik Purnima. It is one of the biggest festivals of Sikhs. On this day Sikhs offer their prayers and pay homage to the Guru Granth Sahib.
